Summary: Birthday friendship. Or something.

The playful teasing had subsided as Hikaru and Kaoru had finally fallen asleep, and now Charles and Soubi alone remained awake in the dark room. There was still some time to go until midnight -- Charles had no idea during what hour he'd actually been born and had always used the twelve o'clock stroke as the turning point to another year. God knew he'd never have to worry about being asleep at that hour.
He hadn't really considered that he'd ever have another birthday. He'd been dead, that should have been the end of it. But here he was, and this time he was without Van, without his library, without his roses, without cake or candy or any elaborate comforts.
It was a different start to another year than he'd ever imagined, and he wanted to complain about it, dwell on how ridiculous it was that he couldn't even have a cake to celebrate, but in reality--
He'd invited Soubi here. To the home he shared with the twins, not to the abandoned room where their interactions usually took place. Because -- it was weak and idiotic and he wouldn't admit it, not to the twins, at least -- but if he was going to live to see another year, he had wanted to start that year with all of them.
He thought Riku would be proud.
Now, he moved closer to Soubi, seeking out his warmth as the nights had begun to grow colder. He glanced over at the other bed -- making sure once more that the twins were asleep because even now, he still couldn't bring himself to show vulnerability in front of them if he could help it -- and then rested his head on his shoulder with a soft sigh, satisfied for now with the silence.
