The next time they meet
Who: Ness and Paula.
Where: Their apartment.
When: Tuesday night, sometime after Haseo was rescued from the hospital.
Rating: PG? :'D *sucks at ratings*
Summary: Ness comes back to the apartment after some confessions about their feelings.
the log:
At the moment, Paula took to gaping outside the dark window of the apartment she shared with Ness and Poo. The scene was as bleary as always, but she was too bored to do anything else and too giddy to sleep. Poo was out somewhere in the thick of the night, but she was fairly sure he was just wandering the apartments, for he didn't have much business outside in the thick of danger where he couldn't see well. Instead, she found herself waiting, veiled in anticipation.
Ness braced himself to enter. He had only recently returned from the hospital, and brought Haseo back out amongst the living. Even after staring down the monsters within the hospital, the boy's heart was racing. The words he had spoken to Paula kept repeating in his head. He made his way up the apartment, and stopped at his door. He took a deep breath and rubbed his eyes before entering.
"I'm home!"
Paula whirled around speedily, face glowing as she shrieked, "Ness!" Climbing to her feet, she raced for the door and collapsed into Ness' arms, only to find herself glomping the floor instead. The impact was like a smack to the face and she lifted her body off the floor shakily, on hands and knees. "Ehe, owww..."
Ness couldn't help but smile, offering a hand to help her up. He led her up slowly before deciding to speak again.
"I think you were looking more for something like this..." he whispered, pulling the young blonde into his arms and embracing her. "Am I right?"
Paula molded perfectly to the affectionate gesture and squeaked softly, restricting herself from breathing. For once, she was grateful for the darkness. It shielded her obviously flushed face well. Secretly she made a promise never to let go, but that was something bound to be broken. She didn't care.
His face was beet red as well. Even so, holding her in the doorway, everything felt right. All the tension seemed to just drain out of him. He let his eyes fall closed, his ears hearing only the rain and the occasional light movement between the two. He kept searching his mind for something to say, but nothing came to him. He just stood there in silence, feeling the affectionate warmth from the friend he had traveled with for months on end.
Finally, Paula allowed her breath to escape her in a collective sigh, resting her head gently upon Ness' shoulder and loosening her grip. Her body relaxed in their hold and she thought. Finally. This was something she had wanted, she finalized that. The only thing that escaped her lips was "Ness...", for it was all she could think about.
He eventually loosened his grip, slipping himself out of the embrace so he could see her face. Every time he saw it, he could only smile. Now they had to sort things between them, since their feelings had finally come to light. "We should sit down for a minute, I think," he whispered, avoiding becoming any louder, as if it would break the moment between them.
He moved away from the door and closed it gently, leading her to a bundle of blankets they could both sit in. In truth, he felt rather cold from being out in the rain, and wanted to bundle up. Paula complied eagerly, shifting around so that they could both get comfortable inside the bundle. There was no way this face was going away anytime soon. Something strangled her words and disallowed them to come out, making her temporarily dumb. Ness...
He lightly ran his fingers along her hand, admiring her beauty before deciding to speak. "So this changes things between us, hm?"
She swallowed. "Um... well, by the looks of it, yeah, I guess it does..." Her fingers instinctively clasped between Ness'. She looked to where his face was but only caught a faint silhouette. His presence was enough and she felt the rush of warmth spread through her like soothing fire.
"...I'm glad." He finally broke the silence, lifting her hand to his cheek and brushing her skin lightly. "I think I finally realized it when you were kidnapped in Fourside."
"Then?" Paula pondered over Ness' insight, imagining what types of feelings had seized Ness after that event. She didn't quite understand her feelings, but she felt a longing to be near him for what seemed longer than that. It was just ungraspable.
"I felt like I shouldn't try to burden you. Heck, I didn't even know if we were going to come back alive. I always told myself, if we did, then I'd tell you how I felt," he said, realizing a few things he didn't even see himself. "Coming to Discedo changed that plan, though. It never changed how I felt. I love you," he whispered, squeezing her hand lightly for emphasis.
Paula smiled. "It sounds a bit morbid, but I'm glad I came." She paused before lowering her head a tad and speaking in a lower voice. "To be honest, I... um, I also felt something for you. At first I didn't know. I was just drawn to you and it made the adventure more bearable." She laughed lightly, somewhat flustered. "Naturally, as time went on, I thought about it. I stayed up at night sometimes. Pretty soon, it felt like we were naturally good friends, and that only made it more obvious the more time we spent together. Even Jeff, even Poo, but... there's something different about you."
"When did you finally realize it?" he asked, looking at the outline of her face in the darkness.
She paused to think about it. "I... I really don't know. It took some time. I think it happened somewhere in Fourside."
"So we realized it at the same time… or around then. I'm just happy we both realized it." He said, edging closer to her and laying his arm around her shoulders.
"Y-yeah... maybe it was magic?" Paula knew after that she may find herself saying strange or stupid things. Her mind was whirling into a mess of pure emotion and succumbing to the affection Ness gave her. She tilted her head and rested her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes peacefully but attempting to keep a lid on her heart to prevent it from flying away.
"It's a dream come true, that's all I know. You mean everything to me." Boy was his face red now. He bent his elbow slightly and ran his fingers gently through Paula's hair. He faced down all kinds of monsters in his own world, even a talking pile of vomit, yet he was still as tongue-tied as ever.
"I didn't know... this could happen so fast!" Paula stuttered quietly. "I'm just..."
"A little overwhelmed? You aren't the only one." He laughed softly, fingers continuing to dance through her blond locks.
"It's just... so sudden!" Paula sighed. "But I'm so happy." She couldn't resist draping her arms over his form lightly, burrowing her face into his shoulder and inhaling his scent. She felt she was going crazy.
"After what happened to Haseo... You know, we never know what'll happen the next day. I felt like I should tell you, that you needed to know," he whispered, tilting her head up and planting a soft kiss on her forehead.
She turned her head to the side a bit. "That's why I'm going to do whatever is in my power to protect you. Which reminds me... I should mention I'm going to get my chip taken out sometime soon. I thought I should tell you. I seriously hope you don't disapprove or anything."
"Of course not, how could I? We both felt blind without our powers… And I'll stay with you through the whole thing." Ness could never refuse her something like that, letting his arms slide down and encircle her back. He knew what she must be going through, especially with having been born with the same gifts.
"It's so hard. I mean, I've always been able to use them... I used them like a second nose or another pair of ears. It opened a new world to me that I took for granted. I'll endure the pain so long as I can become more useful to everyone. It would just be easier on me."
"I understand completely, Paula. And you won't be alone, I'll stay with you all through your recovery. Powers or no, just having you here makes it easier to get up every morning," he admitted, resting his chin gently on her head.
"...This feels so sappy." She laughed softly, hugging him tighter so that their bodies pressed closer. "But thank you. I'm going to have the operation Saturday, I hope."
"Maybe, but right now, nothing else matters to me... just you." Ness couldn't help but laugh as well, letting out a content sigh from being so close to the one he loved. "I'll make sure you're as comfortable as possible."
"I'm not psychic, but somehow I knew you would." Her smile brimmed with brightness as she huddled closer to the warmth of Ness' body, partially resting on his lap.
"You know me too well." He grinned, his hands running down to the small of her back when she huddled closer to him.
Paula stopped moving for a moment. Then, she pressed her forehead against Ness', attempting to look him in the eyes. Her hands rested upon each of his shoulders. Whispering, she told him, "I love you." Then, with shaky, intense hesitation, their noses touched. She swallowed.
"And I, you." Ness whispered breathlessly. He could feel her marine colored eyes gazing into his, then the touch of her nose. His heart was racing at this point, it sounded like a heavy drum in his ears. He felt her so close... all it took was a slight tilt of the head, and...
He raised one hand to the back of her neck, and connected with a gentle kiss to her warm lips.
Exactly what she was trying to sneak. Something seized her and brought her to life, the warmth soaring through her veins as she felt Ness' lips with hers. If hearts were combustible, hers would have exploded and left her Love's brand new victim. It all seemed too surreal, as though this were a dream, a movie, a memory. She didn't know when to stop, but she knew they would break the kiss at exactly the right moment, because everything went so smoothly between them, so natural.
Everything around him seemed to melt away. Nothing else mattered right now, his senses, attention, affection, all on the girl he rescued in Peaceful Rest Valley, who he had spent what seemed an eternity traveling with. Every pent up emotion he felt for her came out with that kiss, and made him feel like he was floating through the air, completely at peace.
When they stopped, she broke for air, breathless nonetheless. Her loving gaze was focused solely on Ness, still in disbelief over the whole kissing incident. It was like sparks that ignited from an electrical current, and it was fabulous.
"That was... amazing."
Ness attempted to fill his own lungs, but the kiss shared between the two had halted any chance of that. His gaze remained locked with hers, still feeling the tingling sensation of her lips against his. It was far more powerful than anything else he had ever experienced. All he could do was gaze back into her eyes and smile, before finding the right words to say. "No kidding..." He knew in his own heart that she made everything worth it. He loved her with every ounce of his being, and wanted to sing it to the world.
Paula tackled him with a hug once more, light with laughter. "Oh my God, I love you! IloveyouIloveyouIlooove you!" She rocked him back and forth, attempting to crush his frame with her arms.
Ness let out unrestrained laughter, nuzzling against Paula's cheek. He held on tightly to her, never wanting to let go. "And I love you too! With everything I am, I love you."
