the log:
Vash had spent the past couple of hours peering around corners and following voices down the hall. It was never in the same place, but it was always the same person.

Rem.

He still saw her frequently in dreams, but this seemed so much more vivid. It was like she was actually there. But...wasn't it like that when he was dreaming? He kept telling himself that the whole thing shouldn't be affecting him so much.

"Vash!" he heard her say, "Don't you want to help me and Knives? We're going to make dinner!"

Vash blinked and he saw his twin - just a child, back when he smiled more than Vash did, back when he was still innocent and kind - leaning around Rem to grin at him and wave for him to join. Vash remembered that night. Before Tessla, before the Fall, before he lost not only Rem, but Knives as well... How long ago had that been? He'd lost count of the years.

"...You're not actually there," Vash informed the vision in a hollow tone. Rem laughed and reached out to poke his nose, though she stayed too far away to reach him.

"Do you know what tomorrow is? It's a very special day! You and Knives will be a year old! What would you like to do to celebrate?"

Vash couldn't help but smile sadly. Life really was finding new ways of being cruel. It hardly seemed like a fair fight. At least this was something pleasant to see. ...At the moment.
