Who: Ness
mrbaseballfan and Hawkeye
yankeedoodledr
Where: The clinic mostly.
When: March 1st
Rating: PG13
Summary: Memories mix and blend as the magic fruit takes effect.omg I'm so poetic
the log:
Ness made his way into the clinic once the trouble had passed, he had forgiven Hawkeye, and now it was time to reconcile in person, as well as see how Moa was doing. On his way in, he took a bite out of one of the apples Yorda delivered to the High School, finding it quite sweet and juicy. Wiping his mouth on his sleeve, he made his way to the clinic. "Yo, doc?" He called out, expecting Hawkeye to appear shortly
Discedo never seemed to be in short supply when it came to bizarre incidents. Hawkeye had forgotten the last time an entire week had passed without some sort of odd revelation or down right disaster. Angels in the library, zombies in the clinic (well, not anymore but the point still stood) and otherworldly zoos invading their privacy.
This latest thing felt familiar though - visions, hallucinations. Just like on New Years Eve except far less tangible.
Perhaps he just needed some rest. But first he should check up on Tomokai, she hadn't replied when he called for her and he was worried. But just as he was about to pack away the work he had been occupying himself with a familiar voice called out - Ness.
He emerged from whatever depth of the clinic he had ended up in, smiling at the boy.
"Hey, fancy seeing you here!"
Ness shot Hawkeye a cheerful grin. It was good to be on friendly terms with him again, and it certainly helped further Moa had been with him. He peered around, searching for her as he made his way over here. "Y'know, for being right after a monster attack, this place is surprisingly quiet." He noted, slipping his backpack off onto one of the beds.
"I'm pretty surprised myself. Looks like most of the people here has learned how to stay in one piece."
Surprising indeed. Even he had managed to stay relatively unharmed, not counting the numerous cuts and bruises on his hands. Nothing permanent though, just uncomfortable.
"So you got through it all right?"
Ness nodded enthusiastically to the older man. He made punching motions with his arm, flicking imaginary goggles over his eyes. "Yeah! I met this kid named Mag, he just got here not too long ago. He saved my bacon more times than I can count, and Prydain gave him an invitation to Gohl." He paused, a respectful smile crossing his face. "Believe me, he earned it."
It was just like Ness to get through an ordeal and not only stay alive but be able to laugh about it as well. Hawkeye could feel his spirits lifting already, despite the rather unsettling shadows that lingered in the corner of his eye.
"So Gohl is invite-only, huh? Like a dystopian secret society?"
"Yeah, it is. I want people to be safe, but I understand what Prydain means about wanting security. Not everyone that comes here is gonna be good, and I can honestly say I fully trust everyone who lives in Gohl. It's one of the few places around here I can be completely relaxed when I sleep."
Ness instinctively glanced behind himself, lingering for a moment before turning back to Hawkeye. "Did you hear something just now? Like a kid?"
"I don't blame you, not at all."
Hawkeye gave Ness a concerned look - hearing voices? Maybe it was all part of...whatever it was that was going on right now. He couldn't deny that his own mind had been playing tricks with him for the past couple of hours, but so far there had been no voices.
"...are you ok, buddy?"
"Yeah, I feel fine. I just thought I heard a familiar voice just now. Maybe it was Soul or something. He's probably got another tear in his jacket he wants me to fix." He spoke to Hawkeye, but in truth, his voice sounded very distant at that time, as if he was looking into the past.
He didn't reply, just kept his eyes fixed on Ness. There was something eerie about all this. Maybe they were finally all going mad? You never knew, not in this place or anywhere else.
"That was...Lucas?" Ness turned away from Hawkeye, following what he perceived to be the young boy. Once outside, his eyes widened in shock. Porky's mechanical monstrosity was closing the distance between the school and the machine itself. "This is bad.. Hawkeye, get back inside!" Ness drew his bat in anger, he knew this was going to be an impossible fight to win, but Lucas was with him. He would win, for the boy's sake.
And then something strange happened. Another Ness appeared, this one with his full power. Both Ness and Lucas began fighting Porky's spider mech.
Ok, this had just gone from eerie to down-right disturbing. If it wasn't for the second, obviously un-chipped Ness Hawkeye would have assumed from the boys reaction that this was nothing but the next disaster the city had lined up for them. And as far as hallucinations go... this was just a tad bit too real for his liking.
"You never told me that you have a twin brother."
"I don't." He said simply, eyes narrowed on the scene. This battle had played out exactly as he recalled it, up to Porky's defeat by the hands of both boys, a combined effort of PK Starstorm from both, which produced quite an interesting light show.
The next part was straight from his memories as well. A nearby rooftop housed Wario with a strange looking laser cannon strapped to his chest. Wario took a few shots at Ness initially, but the boy's psychic acrobatics proved too quick for the villain. Wario then turned his sights on Lucas, and Ness barely had enough time to push Lucas out of the way when the beam collided with his own body, changing him into a statue at their feet.
So this was what the kid went through back home... no wonder he had been so upset by that argument a few weeks back. Hawkeye opened his mouth to say something, but he barely had time to form a sentence before something distracted him.
Something very familiar.
The sound of shelling. It started out distant but gradually grew closer, the scene slowly shifting around them until it resembled some bizarre mix between the boys memories and his own from the Battalion Aid Station. Oh, he knew this place.
"Can you- Do you hear that?"
"Depends, did you see the tub of lard with the laser a second ago? I think I know the answer to that." His gaze darted around this new area, it looked completely unfamiliar to him, yet somewhat similar to the swamp known as Deep Darkness. "Where are we?"
"Korea"
He gritted his teeth at the sight of the familiar shed. It felt real all right, but still dreamlike enough for him to not worry - there was no way that they had ended up at an Aid Station just like that.
The shelling grew closer by the minute and slowly but surely he began to make out new shapes in the dimly lit room - medics, patients, young men laid out on stretchers. Hawkeye almost half-expected to see himself any moment now, but so far he was absent.
The room shook as another shell landed dangerously close, sending a cascade of dust and splinters down from what was left of the roof. Instinctively he crouched down with his hands over his head - it wasn't real, couldn't be, he wasn't really there but hell if he wanted to take the risk of being wrong.
Ness, unfortunately, looked quite scared. His hand gripped part of Hawkeye's shirt, his grip going knuckle white as the shelling got closer. Times like this, he showed he was still a kid, hiding close to Hawkeye's body and trying to make himself seem as small as possible.
To be quite frank, he was terrified. No powers, no team to help him. One of those shells strikes the building, and they're done. Yet even in his terror, the boy is fascinated by the doctors who continue to operate even in these conditions, watching as they block debris from falling into open wounds, and remain unflinching no matter how close the shelling seems to get.
"This was our biggest supplier of wounded." Hawkeye quipped, trying to lighten up the mood while slipping an arm around the boys shoulders for comfort. It had been a while since he last spent a visit to Battalion Aid and the scene that played out in front of them stirred up a whole slew of memories and emotions he had tried his best to push away. Slowly but surely he let himself fall back into his old life, his old mannerisms and defense systems. Why not give the kid a tour while they were here? Ness had showed him a glimpse of his home, so returning the favor now that he got the chance would only be fair.
"The place I worked at doesn't see as much action, but sometimes Battalion Aid needed reinforcements so they sent one of us surgeons."
He paused, wondering if he really should continue on that particular track that his mind seemed to go on.
"I uh... wrote my will up here once."
Ness nodded, looking around the building. The remaining doctors within seemed to either not care about their presence, or not even notice it. He nodded as he was listening, careful to observe the world around them. He paused when Hawkeye mentioned his will. This time, his gaze laid upon the man, meeting him eye to eye. "Did you think you were going to die here?"
"....Yeah."
He kept the eye contact for a few seconds longer before breaking it. His own mortality had always been a sensitive issue and he couldn't really talk about it while looking at Ness - instead his gaze landed upon a newly arrived casualty. Just a kid, couldn't be more than eighteen years old. One leg gone and half his guts blown off - even if he made it down to the 4077th or the 8063rd alive he'd be passed over in triage. One more for the statistics.
"Three years just a couple of miles from the front... I've been close to dying more times than I can count."
Ness looked at Hawkeye in silence. He understood, his mentor knew Ness had feared death when he first arrived. All he could do now was pat his mentor on the back. "I... don't really know what to say, doc."
He paused, looking back over to the boy, a new resolve shining in his eyes. "You went through all this without flinching, even when you could die at any time."
"Sadly, you get used to it. You should have seen me the first week."
And with that the scene began to flicker and fade out. Hawkeye straightened himself up and sighed - he didn't really want Ness to see all that but he hadn't been able to do anything about it.
He gave Ness a concerned look - there was something about him that seemed different.
"You all right there, buddy?"
"Y-yeah." He said, his voice distant and mind deep in thought. He shook his head.
"I think I need to..well.. Think about something. If you see Moa, tell her to find me at Gohl." He said, looking back to Hawkeye. "I think I know what I need to do now."
"...all right."
Something was definitely going on. Maybe the boys own memories in combination with the bloodshed that was Korea had shaken him up more than Hawkeye thought it would. Still there was no reason for him to stop Ness from going back to Gohl and work it over. If he needed to talk he would.
"Take care, ok? Don't be a stranger."
"Yeah... Alright." And so he left, oddly enough, leaving his backpack behind, but he was long gone before Hawkeye could call out to him and ask him to retrieve it. Now Ness had plenty of thinking to do about the choices he had made while in the city, and while out of it.
This was gonna be a long night.
