Where: High School, Computer Lab A
When: Sunday evening
Rating: PG-13 for angst, and images of a violent nature
Summary: Just because he's no longer at home doesn't mean that he hasn't carried his burden with him.
the log:
Gordon's vaguely aware that what's he's seeing is some sort of dream. Either that, or it's déjà vu, because he knows he's seen this before. That doesn't make it any easier, though.
He and Alyx are back near the mine that they had to pass through to get to White Forest. There's an otherworldly cooing sound off in the distance, and it makes both of them nervous.
They have to shake it off and keep moving, but it doesn't mean that Gordon's any less apprehensive. (Especially the second time around.) This time, though, the howls are all around him, and they fade in and out as he sprints across the yard. The edges of his vision blur into a gray swirl, as if something is mocking him. He shakes it off, but the feeling doesn't quite go away.
Alyx peers across the gate that they find, gun up but ready at a moment's notice.
Gordon nods; of course. He doesn't like leaving her alone, but she's the one with the gun. She'll be fine. She's Alyx, after all. It takes him an eternity to get to up to the rooves and find the way in; Alyx keeps encouraging him from below. She'll keep watch, she promises, (Somewhere, Gordon distantly realizes that's not going to be enough.) as he hops down from the roof into a building. He looks around before hearing another warble behind him that echoes eerily, and he hits the gate control before he hears it again. He turns, and sees (a Hunter) a creature behind him, some kind of new Synth. It stares back at him before ducking into the next corridor.
Horrified, Gordon realizes it's gunning for Alyx.
The next part of the dream almost happens in slow motion: his limbs are heavy as he runs toward a trap door in the shed, and he hears Alyx's voice echoing in his ears.
The faster he runs, the more it seems like everything slows down around him, and when he finally reaches the trap door and crawls under the building to the yard outside, he's thankful beyond words to see Alyx. Maybe it's different this time. Maybe she won't...
But she does. She gives him a relieved, grateful smile right before the Hunter leaps down on her, knocking her to the ground. Alyx tries to crawl toward him, away from the thing but she's too slow, and it follows her, as if it's taking pleasure in her attempts to save herself. Gordon's frozen in fear as she reaches a hand out to him, and before he can even turn away, it
impales her with one of its front pincers. He watches as it tosses her aside like a ragdoll and his vision fades. His eyes open again, moments later, to see and hear her still struggling to get up before it impales her a second time, and kicks her limp form with one of its three legs.
His vision fades another time... and then? It starts again. Over and over, he watches her die, each time knowing that he doesn't save her, he can't save her... she gets better eventually but that's not the point.
"That's NOT it at aaall."
a bodiless voice tells him. It doesn't sound human at all, and Gordon recognizes it instantly: 'our mutual friend,' Eli called him right before he died. His face half-fades into view, superimposed over Alyx's lifeless corpse.
"You just... let-her diiiie... ssssquassshed like a BUG by a human hand. And Mr.-Freeman, do not try to PROtesssst me that sssshe was sssaved by your actions LATer on. You let her die. "

Back in the real world, Gordon's tossing and turning, with no end in sight. He's also whimpering silently, and mouthing 'no, no, no' as much as he can, hoping it will stop.
