the log:

It was hard to realize how stressed you were until you started to relax a little. Umi was beginning to feel this as each movement began to feel easier and easier...admittedly, it took a while, but maybe having fun was just what she needed to remember how she felt before this whole mess began. Before Discedo, maybe even before Cephiro, though not before Hikaru and Fuu. Somehow they had worked their way into every part of her past, like they'd known each other forever...
She had finished her turn at cooking for a while, and while she definitely enjoyed it, it was nice to have a break too. Somehow it had turned from a cookout into a festival, some kind of huge party, with a few people dancing as Demyx, Rocketbilly and the rest of the band played like tomorrow would never come. It was nice to see everyone having fun; it was nice to have fun, after the stressful weeks, waiting, fighting, training, trying to look after people... She didn't realize how much she had needed a break.

Zuko had been content to remain away from the crowds of people, watching everyone enjoying themselves and having a grand old time. The food was great, these people actually knew what they were doing when it came to cooking. He was just happy no one had bothered him to firebend their meals for them, because he hadn't felt like it for once. Despite being completely anti-social he was actually able to find some relaxation in it all. Even if the haunting memory of his sister's arrival was freash on his mind, she hadn't made it to the party to crash it, so he was happy enough. Though it did make him remember the time at the Beach and part of his heart ached for the time when they actually got along for the most part. He remembered Mai and their time spent together, what they confessed to each other that night at the fire, it made him long for home. What normally would have given everyone a happy attitude had turned his a little sour. This...just wasn't his scene at all. He contemplated leaving...

It wasn't hard to spot Zuko, really. He stood out, the sole still person in a group of people that wouldn't stop moving. Umi considered leaving him alone -- he did look a little...lost in thought, after all. But this sort of thing might never happen again and even if it did, who knew who would be there...or who wouldn't? So, after tapping a finger to her chin with a little thought, she approached the solitary prince.
"You should try to have more fun at something like this," she mused, putting a hand to her cheek. "You never know when you'll get another chance~"

He had been staring distantly at the floor, arms cross tightly over his chest. He'd decided to tear the sleeves off of his mahogany hoody in favor of exposing his arms. The hood was back and he was lacking a shirt under it, it had been torn to shreads and used as bandages after the fight with larxene. He really needed to go shopping again. Umi's words broke him from his thoughts and he looked up at her, lofting a solo brow. "I am having fun." He lied, turning his eyes from her to stare at...something in the distance to his right...

...He said with a deadpan expression. The lie was pretty obvious, really, especially when he shifted his attention away. Umi was torn between amusement and rolling her eyes; eventually she settled on a happy medium, giving an incredulous look. "You say that, but you look more like you're going to the dentist," she said, tsking a bit. She seemed in a particularly good mood though; she had come there for that very reason, after all. Even looking nice; the shopping expedition with Bulma and Mona had been so necessary. Even with the failed, disastrous, and pretty scary second attempt with just Mona, she couldn't really dwell on it. Not right now, at least. "Oh! You should come dance!" The very idea of it sounded, well, odd.

Yes, yes it was. Those eyes did turn back to her though but he was giving her an increduous look instead. "Are you kidding?" Him. Dance? No. Not going to happen.

"No, I'm not," Umi said, blinking, looking honestly surprised...well. for a moment. That moment passed quickly, though, and suddenly there seemed to be a devious glint in her eyes. "Why? Are you scared?"

Oh how he glared at THAT thought. "No. I just don't dance that's all." No, he liked being AWAY from all the people squished together and moving around like idiots.

Oho. He wasn't getting out of this so easily. "That's all?" Umi repeated, her tone disbelieving and somewhat challenging. "Whenever people say that it means it's not true. I bet you really are scared!" She sounded almost amused; she didn't seriously think he was scared of a little dance, of course, but she went with it anyway. Then she sighed almost wistfully, cupping a hand to her cheek as she shook her head. "I guess they don't teach people how to dance where you're from. What a shame~"

"I'm NOT scared." He stated, a firm tone to his voice. Really, the fire nation kids didn't get the chance to go to dances or socials. There had been some records of it in history but they stopped such things sometime after the war started. However, that did NOT mean he didn't know a few things. His Uncle had taught him quite a few different moves and some parts of his firbending form could double as a dance form.

Firm, yes, but convincing? ...Not so much. Umi decided to go along with this, an air of skepticism coming into her posture, face and voice. "Of course not," she said. "I can't see why you would be unless you didn't know how. Then I could see why you wouldn't want people to see you." Maybe that was a bit of smugness, too; aside from a little ballroom dancing that she had been taught at school, fencing and ballet had given her a decent grasp on dancing in general.

There was a roll of his golden eyes to go along with the sigh in response to her actions. Women...sheesh. "It's just not my thing." He muttered flatly.

...Jeez, he was no fun. "A stick-in-the-mud that can't dance. It's nothing to be ashamed of, you know!"

"Just because I don't like to dance doesn't mean I can't OKAY?" He really didn't feel like going out there and making a fool of himself, just because he knew a few moves didn't mean he was good by anyone's standards.

"Then show me." There was a cool edge to Umi's voice, and definitely a challenge in her words. "Otherwise there's no way I'm gonna believe you."

He groaned, planting his face in the palm of his hand. She...really wasn't getting it through her head. "Fine." He grummbled and turned to leave her standing there. Let her believe what she wanted

If ever Umi did roll her eyes, she did so now, and it was an epic eye rolling indeed. For a moment she did nothing, and it looked as though she might have given up. But then she quickly grabbed his arm to drag him onto the dance floor. "Just come on," she said.

Just when he thought he was getting away there was a sharp tug and he found himself being dragged toward the dance floor. Before he could run for it he was surrounded by a wall of writing forms. He tensed looking incredibly uncomfortable.

Now there was nowhere to run. Umi had dragged the hapless prince right into the middle of it, so while there weren't a whole lot of people (Discedo was big, but not that big), it would be hard to get out of the crowd. There was nothing else to do but dance. "Well? Let's see what you've got!"

He was looking for an opening, any opening, but he could swear the people around him were making sure he had no where to run on purpose. He just stared at Umi for a moment, watching her sway before eying the crowd. It...couldn't be that bad right? observing the others movements he started to dance, looking really stiff and completely unsure of himself at first.

It had been a while since she had danced, so Umi was a little awkward at first too. Still, she couldn't help but smile a bit at the whole thing. Having a night to have fun was too good to pass up. "See?" she said, pausing for a step and a turn, "It's not so bad, is it!"

Oh he looked downright rediculous but slowly, the tension was starting to ease out of it as he got the hang of the music and the rythem of the crowd. "...I...guess." He muttered.

"You guess," Umi repeated with some amusement. But that was all she said for now, instead focusing on the music, on moving, on having fun.

He nodded softly, finally relaxed and picking up the beat with ease. He was a quick study and managed to learn the movements of those nearest him, since their dancing was different from what he was used to.

It was hard to tell if Zuko was ever having fun; he looked serious even while dancing. Like he was concentrating so hard. Umi laughed a little and grabbed his hands to spin him around.

He was surprised at first when she grabbed his hand a light dash of red playing over his cheeks as he spun. Once facing her again he found himself dancing in tune with her movements, hand still clasped in hers. He realized this and pulled his hand back, going back to dancing awkwardly. At least he was loosened up now and got the rythem down.

So he could have fun. Who would have thought? Umi was impressed, not to mention honestly enjoying herself. "Not bad!" she said. Although he was still moving kind of weirdly...

A soft tug at the corner of his mouth and the smallest, and I mean miniscule, of smiles appeared for a moment. He finally let go of his inhibitions and began to move a lot more smoothly, watching her dance and moving in tune.

Aha. A smile. Umi made one small, mental prayer -- just in case the world ended or something, you know. Still, she was kind of impressed! She had never thought of combining fighting moves with dancing. Maybe she could do the same with fencing. Her first attempt was less than successful, though, almost resulting in her careening right into the prince. The second was markedly improved.

He swayed and dodged with her dancing as if they were sparring or something in the middle of the dance floor, only it moved fluently and looked like a dance. Oddly these two were able to just coordinate that easily despite how their personalities clashed once and a while. He had to quickly duck aside when her first manuver almost sent her careening into him but at least her second attempt was a lot better than the first. Eventually, after the crowd had given them a little space, he took a few steps back and, with the change of the music and pace, he dropped to the floor to preform a few more intricate moves, looking like he was break dancing.

When she had set her mind to getting him to dance, Umi had wondered a few times if she was making a mistake. It seemed more like a chore than anything, after all. But she was pleasantly surprised to find herself enjoying this situation, and she laughed a bit. "Hey, you're pretty good at this!" Her own moves had turned into a combination of ballroom dancing, ballet and fencing. It was strange, and it felt strange when she wasn't used to being so informal, but it worked, both on its own and with Zuko. More importantly, it was fun.

He realized then that some people were watching him and as he finished a sweeping move low on the floor he stood and went back to dancing near Umi, now a little tense again. He'd let go maybe a little too much. To her comment he flushed a little, "...thanks." He was, having fun though...despite being a little uncomfortable at first.

They were both being watched by a few people, in fact, but that was something Umi had gotten used to. The song was drawing to a close, and she went with it like a current, doing one last spin before finishing off. Her breathing was a little heavier but she was beaming nonetheless.

He wasn't as talented as she was with judging the ending of the song and so his dancing merely slowed until the song finally stopped. His breathing had become heavy as well and sweat was beading softly on his forehead. But he barely noticed as he watched her spin, moving in tune with the music...she...He pushed the thought from his head and bowed, feeling like he needed to for some reason, then turned to leave the floor. That was enough dancing for now...

Usually when a performance was over you bowed to the audience. It was strange to Umi that when they were done he bowed to her, but she blinked and returned the gesture. That much, at least, was habitual for her. A small perplexed look came over her face when he turned to leave, but for once she didn't argue. After a pause, she called out, "That was fun! Thanks, Zuko." Although she wasn't sure why she was thanking him.

"You're...uh, welcome." He uttered back over his shoulder to her and quickly escaped to the table of food and beverages. Blast it all, he had fun...what was wrong with him?
