Helen wrapped her fingers around her cup, studying the woman across from her with a new perspective. One she found she didn’t mind in the slightest.

“I realize this exploration was primarily about my own curiosity, but I do hope you found it an enjoyable experience as well.”

River falls silent at that. "I'm sorry to hear it."

She nods, not entirely certain why she had volunteered that piece of information. Ashley is a subject she rarely discusses these days.

"It was to be expected. I thought I would have more time to prepare."

"There never is enough time." That is something River has learned the hard way over her time with The Doctor. "I wish I could have spent a little more time with my own parents."

Helen lightly strokes the other woman's hair. "What happened?" she asks gently.

"I was taken from them when I was born."

She rests her head on Helen's shoulder. "It's strange. I was able to grow up with my parents while they grew up."

"That must have been difficult. Knowing the truth."

"You could say that. Now, how about you? How did you become a doctor?"

She smiled, tilting her head enough to look at her. "I followed in my father's footsteps. He taught me much of what I know, and eventually, his work became mine."
